We have read The BFG and listened to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on tape.  All the children have been inspired by Roald Dahl and I hope they will continue with this new found enthusiasm for reading.  Sadly, we are coming to the end of the unit of work.  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading and teaching the writing of such a great author.  The children are now in the midst of writing their own stories, trying to follow some of Dahl’s writing rules, and I can’t wait to read their writing.  They are so enthusiatic!  Keep logging into this page to see if your writing appears on the blog.

Connor’s opening created suspense with his clever use of short sentences.  Can you spot them?

One dark night, Jack was in his bedroom awake. “I can’t get to sleep,” said Jack.  He went to the window.  He saw something.  It was coming closer and closer.  Jack was not scared .  He got his shoes, put them on, the big thing was there.  It grabbed him.  Jack said, “Put me down!”

Matthew H’s story opening - Claudia and the Water Horse

Suddenly, there was a flash of lightning, then Claudia woke straight up .It was a dark creepy night when everyone was asleep. She got out of bed and suddenly the floor creaked loudly, Claudia hesitated she saw a light on downstairs.

“Who’s that?”echoed the loud boomy voice of her dad.

“Claudia,” she whispered back.

“Well get back to bed then!”shouted back her dad.

But Claudia didn’t she stayed out and and crept towards the window . It was twelve o’clock in the morning. She thought to herself, “I wonder if this is the witching hour?”she whispered.

There was a big fire in the boys toilet and there was three fire engines. People were crying because they were worried about their brothers and sisters.  The next day the entire school couldn’t go to school because the boys didn’t have any toilets.

Mrs Carter awarded well done cards to the following people:- Luke Bentley and Chloe Yau for their great giant desriptions! Maliha Reza and Charlie Bruce in Mrs Carter’s English group got them for their drama work to produce a T.V interveiw. Well done Sophie Honeywell for being a caring friend.

We have been reading The BFG in class English and looking at the work of the significant author Roald Dahl. We created our own giants and wrote our own scene.

Chloe’s Giant - Human Gobbler

Suddenly as the BFG was drinking the last drop of Frobscuttle there was a rumble and another and another. “Oh no,” shouted the BFG. It was the HUMAN GOBBLER. Just as the BFG had finished that sentence the rock had been rolled over from the cave entrance. The giant that had big yellow crooked teeth and he was probably three times as big as the BFG. His hands and feet where like six giant bolders put together! “He was called the Human Gobbler because he would gobble five or more humans at once and will not even have to chew them!”exclaimed the BFG. The Human Gobbler’s eyes were as red as the sun itself and his nose was as sharp as a knife. As Sophie looked out she felt her eyes were going to pop out!

Luke’s Giant - The Serpent Seaker

Suddenly the ground started to shake and small water spouts popped up in a circle, with a giant one in the middle. Then a giant smashed through the earth, it was the Serpent Seaker.

“Why you here Serpent Seaker!” shouted the BFG as he was blown back by the Serpent Seaker’s roar from his dragon head.

“Catching prey,” hissed the Serpent Seaker staring at Sophie spinning around on the table.

“Then take this!” the BFG shouted suddenly and flung the snozcumber at his face but the Serpent Seaker burnt it to a cinder with fire.

“Looks like I’ll have a double,” hissed the Serpent Seaker as water dripped from his scaly arms and legs. The Serpent Seaker started breathing fire all over the cave like millions of berserk fireworks. The BFG ran for the boulder and ducked as the Serpent Seaker’s slash split the boulder into three.

We had great fun experimenting with Flash on the laptops.  This was the first time the children and Mrs Carter had used Flash but we were really pleased with the end results. We had to be really patient as some of the laptops kept freezing and sometimes we lost work, hence some peoples work is not available for you to see.
